Choose Your Flavor: A Traditional or a More Contemporary Blend
Contemporary Worship Service | Traditional Worship Service | LISTEN TO SERMONS
“At the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” - Philippians 2:10-11
From the beginning, to worship has been a great longing of the human spirit. What people worship has been wrestled about for almost as long. Here at Madison First United Methodist, we have discovered that the only thing worthy of our worship is not a thing at all – it’s a Being - the creative, redemptive Spirit which was from the beginning and will be forever. The object of our worship is God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and we worship with our whole hearts.
Because worship is at the root of our reason for existence, many other things take place. We make and share meaningful relationships. We rejoice together. We make friends of one another. We learn of the needs of others and band together in compassion to help meet those needs. We often find our own needs met by God through using the very same dear souls who have knelt with us at Holy Communion, participated with us in baptisms, joined with us in prayer, and with us the great hymns of the Church.
Because of worship, we become a family – a family with a real, eternal, and all-loving Father. Couldn’t we all use such a great, perfect and loving father as that? Seeking to follow God’s example, worship in our family often includes the involvement of our children and youth, too!

11:00 AM SUNDAY
11 AM Sunday worship is for you if:
...you like traditional things: the stirring swell of a pipe organ, fondly-remembered songs learned long ago at your mother’s knee, confessing our faith through the great Creeds of the Church’s history, choral music sung by a chancel choir, robed clergy, liturgical colors, calls to worship and the like.
...you want to learn more about the Church, its history and traditions as well as to worship.
This traditional United Methodist style service includes congregational involvement as we share our joys and concerns, recite the Lord’s Prayer, the Apostles or another of the Church’s Creeds, and the singing of the Doxology (“Praise God from whom all blessings flow.”). Our children serve as acolytes, assistants during Holy Communion, and several young ladies participate in a Liturgical Dance Team which leads us in both worship services about once every other month.
The first Sunday of each month we observe Holy Communion. The second Sunday has some type of children’s involvement (from time to time our pastor, Grady Mosley, will do a children’s message using “magic!). The third Sunday hosts a missional directive, helping us to keep a high priority on serving those in need outside our church: locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. (See our missions page for more.) Each fourth Sunday we encourage baptisms, the joining of new members, and all the other things that “encourage and make mature, Christian disciples” right here at home.
Although the traditional service is more formal in style, it preserves the spirit of the warm and welcoming heart that is so evident here at Madison First United Methodist Church.
A loving, professionally staffed nursery is available in the Education Building for children under age three. A beeper is provided parents, “just in case.”
We invite you to come as you are, be a part of the family, and share with us our joy in celebration of the message and legacy of Jesus Christ, no matter which “flavor” you choose!
